Middletown High School hires new women's basketball coach

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - A 2001 Middletown High School grad has been tapped to coach their women's basketball team.

Pending Board of Education approval, Kelvon Moss will join the Middletown staff.

Middletown Athletic Director Gary Lebo said, “Coach Moss brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in coaching the game of basketball.  He is someone that will reach out to the community and is the proven role-model and leader that will be good for our program.”

Kelven was a 3-year varsity letterman, team captain and leading scorer for the Middies. Kelven played collegiate basketball at Cumberland University.

Kelven has been part of the Middies Men’s coaching staff the last two years who have won back to back GMC championships and was the Director of the Middletown Travel League/Skeeter Payne Youth Basketball.

Local college freshman leads surge to runner-up finish in regional tournament

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - Cincinnati State freshmen golfers Matt Nickoson and Austin Kyle led the Surge golf team to a runner-up finish in the NJCAA Region XII Tournament held at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown.

Playing the three round tournament on Weatherwax's Meadows & Woodside courses, Nickoson and Kyle tied for second place in individual play with net scores of 226. Kyle propelled himself into contention with score of 72 (E) in Saturday's second round to go along with a 76(+4) and 78(+6). Nickoson shot consistent scores of 74 (+2) and a pair of 76s (+4).

Cincinnati State's freshmen tandem were narrowly defeated by Tyler Grant, who led Vincennes University (IN) to its second consecutive Region XII title with a 224. Grant posted scores of 75 (+3), 72 (E) and 77 (+5). The low round of the tournament belonged to VU's Jackson Cowden, who posted a 71 (-1) on his way to a 4th place finish with a net score of 227.

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - Ross High School was the only Butler County School on Newsweek's 2013 America's Best High Schools List.

Earlier this school year, the Ohio Department of Education announced that Ross Local School District had earned the highest Performance Index of any district in Butler County and 66th highest in the state for the 2011-2012 school year. 

Additionally, Ross High School recently learned that its graduation rate for the Class of 2012 was finalized at 97.8%, which is believed to be the highest in the history of the school. 

In a statement Ross Principal Brian martin says, “There is no magic to our success.  We have a dedicated staff teaching great kids who are supported by parents and a community that value and recognize the importance of education.”

Enrollment goal surpassed for fall semester at Miami University

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Miami University has supassed their enrollment goal for students who plan on attending in the fall.

A record number of students had applied for fall 2013 admission. More than 22,500 students applied which is up nearly 11 percent from the previous year. As of the May 1 confirmation deadline, the number of first-year students confirming their enrollment to Miami surpassed the university’s goal of 3,600. Currently, 3,752 students are committed to attending Miami in the fall.

The academic qualifications and diversity of the admitted student pool increased, making this year one of the most selective for first-year admission to Miami. Students accepted to Miami scored highly on standardized tests: 32.3 percent scored 30 or above on the ACT. On the SAT (Critical Reading + Math), 32.5 percent scored 1300 and above.
