MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - Former NFL receiver and Middletown Football legend Cris Carter is being honored in his hometown by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Allstate.

Hamilton native to deliver keynote speech at computer science conference

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Miami University’s Computer Science and Software Engineering Student & Alumni Conference will feature a keynote presentation from alumnus Juan Gilbert

The class of 1991 grad will speak at 2:15 p.m. Friday, April 12 in Patten Auditorium (Benton Hall).

Now in its 11th year, the conference allows CSE/ECE students (majors and minors) and alumni to hear presentations on current technologies and explore career opportunities.

Gilbert is the presidential endowed chair in computing at Clemson University.  He also leads the human centered computing (HCC) division lab in the university’s school of computing.

A Hamilton native, Gilbert was honored by the mayor led city council when it declared February 2012 “Dr. Juan Gilbert Month."

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Hamilton woman appointed new judge for Butler County Domestic Relations court

HAMILTON,  OH (FOX19) -  A new judege has been appointed to serve on the Butler County Domestic Relations Court.

On Wednesday, Governor John Kasich announced that City of Hamilton lawyer Margot B. Halcomb will assume the office vacated by Sharon Kennedy, who was elected to the Supreme Court of Ohio.

Halcomb will assume office on April 2, 2013, and must run in November 2014 to retain the seat for the unexpired term, which ends January 3, 2017.

Halcomb received a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University in Oxford, and earned her juris doctorate from Capital University Law School. From 1996 to 2007, she served as a magistrate on the Hamilton Municipal Court.

Halcomb has been involved in organizations such as the Hamilton Rotary Club, YWCA of Hamilton, the Hamilton Jr. Women’s League, and the Great Miami Valley YMCA. Since 2007, she has been the vice president and trust officer at First Financial Bank.

Ross teacher honored as Faculty Member of the Year by OSBA

ROSS TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - A Ross Middle School teacher is being recognized by the Ohio School Board Association as the Faculty Member of the Year.

An announcement was made on Tuesday that Jennifer Noxsel has been given this honor.

Mrs. Noxsel has been responsible for developing a highly successful FIRST Lego League Robotics program at Ross Middle School. FIRST is an acronym for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. At FIRST Lego League (FLL) tournaments teams pit their robots against each other on a mission playing field in an arena complete with an emcee, music, and screaming fans. It’s all friendly competition, with an emphasis on learning and discovery rather than winning.

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Kayla Harrison talked to Cory Stark on Thursday about the changes in her life since winning.

The American judo fighter and Middletown native defeated Britain's Gemma Gibbons for the gold medal in the 78-killogram division.

Harrison was born in Middletown and is a graduate of the former West Middletown High School. She currently resides in Wakefield, Mass.

Harrison was the third U.S. player ever to win the Junior World Championships in 2008. She won the Olympic team trials in 2008 in 78kg, but was unable to compete at the games as Team USA had not qualified the division. She won a gold medal at Pan-America Games in 2011.

Hamilton woman advances at Senior Independence offices

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A leader in long-term care is directing regional offices for one of Ohio's premier providers of home and community based services.

Cheryl Withrow recently accepted an executive director position at Senior Independence.

She manages the day-to-day operations of the Southwest Ohio and Miami Valley offices, which cover the home health care and hospice needs in 14 Ohio counties, including several retirement villages and adult day centers and one senior center.

Withrow, who has a 29-year career in the industry, is a licensed nursing home administrator and has a Master of health care administration.

"Cheryl's background in health care is driven by her passion to do what's right for the patient," says Senior Independence President Peggy Bertels.
