Middletown clean up with hundreds of volunteers to celebrate Earth Day

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - The annual Earth Day/Arbor Day celebration in Middletown resulted in approximated 1,000 hours of volunteer effort by the 482 people who registered with Keep Middletown Beautiful and many more who did not register, but just showed up at a location of their choice to  help clean parks and public areas in Middletown.

According to Jeff Michael, Executive Director of Keep Middletown Beautiful, “This was one great effort. We put together several individual components – Arbor Day tree planting, clean up/paint/mulch at the parks, roadway cleaning, river clean up, educational sessions at Miami University Middletown, old prescription collection, PAWS animal adoption, hazardous waste collection at Middletown High School and each piece was very successful.   We thank the many people who helped.”

COLUMBUS, OH The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will host an open house on Friday, Feb. 15 to educate lake users and community members on a proposed lake management plan for Acton Lake, which is located in Preble and Butler counties.

After reviewing public input gathered over the past year, ODNR is considering a lake management proposal that would allow watercraft powered by more than 10 horsepower to access the lake, provided that they only operate at idle speed.

The open house will offer information about the regulatory process as well as provide lake users and area residents with an opportunity to submit written comments, ask questions and discuss lake issues with representatives from ODNR.

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Butler County Recycling and Solid Waste District is now accepting applications for its 2013 Recycling Incentive Grant Program. Butler County businesses, schools, non-profit organizations and local governments interested in starting or expanding a recycling program can apply for funding.

In 2011, the District awarded more than $18,000 dollars in recycling grants to area organizations. The funding has helped organizations set up recycling infrastructure, purchase recycling containers, and pay for recycling services and promotional materials — resulting in increased capacity for capturing recyclable materials throughout the county.

Grant awards range from $500 to $4000.  Funds are awarded to organizations based on their demonstrated commitment to maintain the recycling programs beyond the grant funding period.
