HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - In the near future the City of Hamilton will be giving a Civil Service Exam for the position of police officer for the Hamilton Police Department. 

Applications must be received by the City of Hamilton, Department of Civil Service by 5:00 pm on Friday, April 30.

The Hamilton Police Department is looking for individuals with good character, communication skills and the ability to use sound judgment to be Police Officers for the City of Hamilton, and to carry out a tradition of service to the residents and those visiting our city with an outstanding level of police service.

April declared Child Abuse Prevention Month in Butler County

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - The Butler County Commissioners will issue a proclamation on Monday, April 15 declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Butler County, Ohio.

The Commission encourages community agencies, religious organizations, businesses and members of the community to help in supporting the most vulnerable families among us and help ensure our children feel loved, supported and protected.

More than 5,000 reports of abuse and neglect in Butler County were reported last year. Child abuse is a community problem and finding solutions depends on involvement from all members of the community.

Former foster youth, whom have emancipated, will join in reading the proclamation and promise to support children and families in their community.

 

Earth Day plans coming together in Middletown

Earth Day plans coming together in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - Organizers of the Middletown Earth Day clean up say that plans are coming together nicely for the April 20 event.

Over 400 people have registered to help clean up Middletown on Earth Day.

According to Jeff Michel, Executive Director of Keep Middletown Beautiful, “there is enough trash for everybody.” 

Of the 31 parks in Middletown, 22 have been targeted for cleaning, planting, mulching and other maintenance work on Earth Day as well as several other areas.

Several groups and individuals will converge on Smith Park to help with the work.  Smith Park has been designated as the park to receive a major overhaul in 2013.

Educational activities at Miami University Middletown from 10 am to 2:30 pm and hazardous waste recycling drop-off at Middletown High School from 9 am to 2 pm will be held on Breiel Blvd.

Hamilton native to deliver keynote speech at computer science conference

OXFORD, OH (FOX19) - Miami University’s Computer Science and Software Engineering Student & Alumni Conference will feature a keynote presentation from alumnus Juan Gilbert

The class of 1991 grad will speak at 2:15 p.m. Friday, April 12 in Patten Auditorium (Benton Hall).

Now in its 11th year, the conference allows CSE/ECE students (majors and minors) and alumni to hear presentations on current technologies and explore career opportunities.

Gilbert is the presidential endowed chair in computing at Clemson University.  He also leads the human centered computing (HCC) division lab in the university’s school of computing.

A Hamilton native, Gilbert was honored by the mayor led city council when it declared February 2012 “Dr. Juan Gilbert Month."

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Help name the City of Middletown community garden

Help name the City of Middletown community garden

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - MetroParks of Butler County and the City of Middletown invite local garden lovers to help name the community garden they are developing at the Middletown Community Recreation Center.

“The purpose of a community garden is to offer space for the community to come together.  It’s wonderful that the community will have ownership to name their garden.”, commented Kathy Edelen, Outdoor Educator and Community Garden Coordinator for MetroParks.

The contest begins at the kick-off event on April 13, 1-4 pm at the community center and runs through May 4th. The winner will be chosen by the garden’s committee consisting of employees of Ohio State University’s Butler County Extension office, MetroParks of Butler County, City of Middletown, and Berns Garden Center.

Dedication planned for new Middletown worship and service center

Dedication planned for new Middletown worship and service center

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) - A dedication ceremony and ribbon-cutting is being held in Middletown at the new Salvation Army worship and service center.

The new center includes a worship center space for 350 individuals, 12 large classrooms for youth and adult character development programs; office spaces; a commercial kitchen facility; large dining hall seating 190; and a large food pantry.

The new facility allows The Salvation Army to continue to reach out and serve others in the Middletown community.

The ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 10:30am on Saturday, April 13 and the dedication will be later that day at 6:30pm.

In addition, The Salvation Army is also celebrating its 125th Anniversary in Middletown as part of the festivities.
